I don't even have VS2005.  That is another thing that makes the install confusing.  What do you *actually* need?

Would I have been wiser to install VS2005 Express first?

First - While XP Pro is NOT a sever product, it does contain IIS (unlike XP Home) and you can create multiple sites with it and those sites can have different permissions

Second - You must give all the proper permissions to the virtual directory also if you are going that way.....don't forget the Network Service

Third - I created my database manually first.  Under this method the TABLES are created automatically (which are different from the database itself)

I don't think anybody was assuming that XP Pro was a server product. For me it's where I develop my stuff so that when it's all working I can move it up to the Windows 2003 production boxes.  The permissions are different between XP and Windows Server- on W2K3 I need to use the IIS_WPG user (not Network Service). XP shouldn't need anything more than ASP_NET permissions on the folder, and it's shouldn't need anything more than Modify at the very highest - even that's too much. The database should be able to be created automatically in SQL 2005. That's the whole idea of the install process as I understand it. It doesn't seem to work under SQL 2000 (at least for me).

If anyone on the core team is reading this, some small bone tossed to us newbies (required reading list before attempting this...) would be nice, as well as a stripped down web.config file and instructions for "Easy Install" for we who just have SQLExpress and XPPro

If it helps, I know my problems all seemed to give decent errors from the ./Install/Install.aspx page along the way and I was able to muddle through.  Now I just screwed up my admin and host logins and can't get back in.  LOL.

Nobody want to be the dummy who has to maintain documentation, but a couple of sticky threads at the top of the Install It section would be a great way to not have to explain the install procedure over and over. One sticky would have information for installing (WITHOUT any version of visual studio) for running on SQL 2005, with a sample working downloadable web.config for the people who can't work out how to unrem a bit of xml. And another for installing on SQL 2000 with the same details. Stickies, with no reply, maintained easily online.

I also screwed up host and admin once but found that if I changed my user password to a plain text password and then changed number in the Password_Format column (in the aspnet_membership table) from 2 to 0 then I could log in without the encrypted password. Much easier than running the aspnet_membership_resetpassword procedure.

VWD 2005 express is actually pretty cool, and to answer my own question, you have to get the source, not the install package:)

frumbert: I made the "server product"comment based on your post of 4-11......point #2 where you said:

2. Yes, I gave proper permissions to the one and only website that WP Pro lets you have. This is not a server product that lets you run multiple sites.

and all I am saying is IIS on XP Pro is the full blown version - I've created a number of test sites on my XP.

The permissions thing - I gave full control to the ASP.NET Machine Account not just modify as per Page 12 of the install section and gave the same permissions to the Network Service account (which is probably different for you because I have a W2K3 domain controller to contend with).  My website is hosted on W2K server and my workstation/test station is running XP Pro.

The docs also state that you must manually create the database - I think the tables are the ones that are created automatically during the install process.

Installing DotNetNuke was a bit of a pain, but (IMHO) an enjoyable one.  This is my second CMS.  The other one (which runs under linux)  is based on PostNuke, which is  PHP/MySQL based.  I find DNN more  robust -- more dynamic.  As a matter of fact, the portal website was PostNuke and I installed DNN "for the difference".  You just have to "dot the Is and cross the Ts"  An automated installer would be good for the less advanced and I am sure it must be in the works.
