Not much.

1.  They both rarely search for things when asked.

2.  Neither of them will find what you asked them to search for despite the results of the search sitting right in front of their faces.

3.  Asking either of them to search often results in timeouts.

4.  The only difference is that my 8 year old is getting better over time with my requests while the forum search is not getting any better despite requests from myself and others.

Please, please do something about this.  I'll even chip in if you want to buy a license for active forums.

This is really an impediment to DNN'ers that need answers.  If the search does not work then people will keep asking the same questions and you will keep answering the same questions.  A huge waste of time for everyone.

Please.

Answer:  You can still sell your 8-year-old to Gypsies but NOBODY wants to buy the Forum search function...

Mike,

I can feel your frustration.  One thing that in the mean time might help is http://www.searchdotnetnuke.com it uses google to search the forums, and works quite well!

Mitch,

Thank you, that link is great.

I guess that's another similarity, If they can't do the search themselves they get someone to help them. :)
