I am new to this, but can someone please tell me the first step to starting a website? I downloaded the starter kit, but cant find anything that seems like the way to starting a website... I have built a dozen websites on Web Easy Professional, which is pretty jank, but it was easy...is this crazy difficult? Do i need to know code? Thanks! Mark

Mark,

This is a very broad question, and not easy to just give an answer to.  What I would recommend is picking up say the "DOtNetNuke 5" book, you should be able to find it linked from this site, or directly from AMazon.

The book goes over a good bit of the examples.  If you are looking at just how to install it on your PC to get started, I have installation tutorials available at http://www.mitchelsellers.com.

You're right...that was a very broad question...

What I meant to ask is: Is there any area or menu that says something to the effect of "start a website" which allows me to pick a skin, or pick a format, or choose from basic templates? I have the install package downloaded and I see the different folders within the application, but I am unable to determine which folder ACTUALLY contains the website software.

Perhaps DotNetNuke doesnt offer pre-fabricated templates that a novice would want to use to learn...or do they?

Thanks,

The Rookie

Hi Mark

The install package is the website software. DNN is a framework. Think of a Mac computer. Yes there's the MacOS but it's running on top of Unix. Without the Unix framework underneath it there's no pretty MacOS interface. When you install DNN it will provide you with some pre-designed templates (called Skins in DNN verbiage).

That's awesome and thank you for that... One last question: which do you recommend I purchase and download? I would like a basic site with the ability foe ecommerce and maybe a forum or chat. Do you recommend a particular framework? Seems like there's a lot to choose from... Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to answer the basics!
