For what its worth, I was having similar problems for a couple weeks now and I just figured out my problem. First, the the other settings mentioned in this thread are necessary.

My mistake was the "users online buffer" value under the "disable users online" in host settings. I had the buffer set to 1 min so my users would log off before the users online scheduler would run. I raised it to 10 minutes and now it works fine. The buffer has to make it possible to purgeusersonline before they expire.

When you turn on the PurgeUserOnline scheduled task, know that this is the task that updates the list, too. So, if you run it every hour, for instance, you will only capture users who've logged in during the online time specified in your host settings. There are quite a few things that come into play here. My suggestion is to turn it on for every minute until you get it working. For instance, I have one setup to run ever 10 minutes, with a users online time of 999 (the max), so we can see all users who've logged in in the past 999 mins (~16.5 hrs). This is for a somewhat low usage site, obviously, and the UO module is only displayed for admins.

For what it's worth, I solved my problem by purging the schedule history in the database.  There is a thread somewhere on the ASP.Net forums describing how to do that, if anyone is interested I'll locate it again.

This would only apply to the people getting time-out errors when accessing the Host->Schedule menu, which in turn affects the UsersOnline module.

There are two things you need to enable.

1.) There is a job in Host -> Scheduler called PurgeUsersOnline (Make sure this is enabled, it is disabled by default).

2.) In Host -> Host Settings, make sure the disable Users Online is unchecked

We hope to have some further documentation in this area.

Hi smcculloch !

It worked! :) thanks a lot.

I have tried all the things suggested here (I am not getting a timeout error), and my Usersonline still does not display.  I am using 4.4.1.

1. disable usersonline is unchecked
2. timezones match on both site and server
3. schedule mode is set to timer method
4. schedule is set to go every 1 minute and is enabled
5. my usersonline time is set to 20 minutes

Did I miss anything?  My UsersOnline table in the db is empty.  Membership shows correctly but UsersOnine and People Online do not display anything.
