After downloading and installing a copy of a DNN from a webserver to my local server, I discovered that the images were still referencing the remote url (http://[remote server name]/mywebsite/.....) instead of the local url (i.e. http://localhost/mywebsite/.........) and as such they could not be displayed. Can someone help me with this?

The image will use the path specified. If you have the source of  your images as the absolute path - http://[remote server name]/mywebsite/image.jpg, it will always use the image on the original site. If a relative path is specified - /image.jpg, it will use the image located on that particular physical instance.

John, are you telling me the only way out is to change the path to the images from the code? What if I don't have access to the source code, is there nothing I can do probably from the database?

Are you talking about static images in the modules or skin or do you refer to content images?

Static modules are always relative on the local dnn installation. Content Links may be entered absolute or relative to the domain address. Make sure to use relative addresses only and use same relative position of the DNN installation in the domain (usually root is preferable). If you need to adjust paths in all Text/HTML modules, there is a free search/replace tool from engage modules AFAIR.
