Nina, thanks for the prompt reply, however as mentioned I have tried this and my issue is that when disabled the mouse pointer still changes when hovering over it giving the impression of a working link, this could be confusing for site visitors.

If what I am trying to acheive is not possible I will have to rethink & shorten my 'top level' menu structure and switch to the horizontal skin.

Aah yes ok I see this now - sorry I should have read more - I can't think of any other tree type menu at the moment that will do what you want.. except - http://www.dotnetjedi.com has a sitemap style menu - and so does http://www.oliverhine.com - they might have more configuration.

We use the sixxac menu available at http://sixxac.com/ccc/DotNetNuke/SixxacMenu/tabid/187/Default.aspx.  It is a vertical, tree style menu, although parent pages can't be collapsed like a treeview (they are always expanded).  But this menu works correctly with the "disabled" setting on parent pages.  I have "parent pages" that are disabled to simply serve as site categories to organize the child pages.
