 this sounds like user modules are not properly configured, did you install a 3rd party registration module and uninstall or sth like this?

No we have not done anything like this. To our knowledge nothing has been changed since we set the site up.

I had the same problem. The issue is once you specify User Page in the Admin>Site Settings>Advance Settings>Page Management the registration page stops working. You'll need to leave that to Unspecified and just go into the roles and User Settings and redirect customers to what ever page you would like.
