I am installing DotNetNuke Community version 5.00.01 on  a Windows Web Server 2008 (64-bit Web Server version).     During the install I am getting the error ".Access to the path 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\DNN50\web.config' is denied." running the installWizard.    I have granted full control to the DNN50 directory to both the Network Service and IIS_IUSRS per the installation instructions.   But, I still get the error.     Searching the web some people say to also grant full access to ASPNET user.   This user does not exist in Server 2008.     Can anyone help?

We are trying to do a proof of concept for Management so we can purchase DotNetNuke Professional and implement it for our web site.

The user that IIS 7 uses is Network Service, you only have to deal with the ASPNET user when you're on Windows 2000 or XP (IIS 5).

Is there any chance that the web.config was added to the folder after the permissions were set?  I would suggest resetting the permissions on all of the children of the DNN50 folder and seeing if that helps anything.

To do that, go to the Security tab on the Properties screen for the folder.  Click the Advanced button.  From here, there may be checkboxes, or you may have to click an Edit button to show the checkboxes.  Once you have the checkboxes shown, first, make sure that there's an item in the list of permissions that lists NETWORK SERVICE as having Modify or Full Control permission that applies to "This folder, subfolders and files," then check the "Replace all existing inheritable permissions..." checkbox, and click OK.

This will replace the permissions of everything in your website folder with the permissions on that folder, and hopefully make sure that the web.config can be read.

Hope that helps,

Updated the security for the directory, but I still get the same error.    I have check the file level properties and the web.config file is not read-only.    Not sure what else to try.

Fixed the problem.    Deleted everything.    Unzipped the install, granted security rights, created database and run install.   Worked this time.

Wow... thanks for posting your fix.  I would have fought this for MANY hours.  I did exactly what you did... Delete, Set Permissions, Re-Add in IIS, and then ran the install... worked fine!
