As a workaround, I thought that maybe I could modify one of the existing properties to achieve my purpose.  However now I am running into a different problem in that when I try to say my edits to the profile.ascx.rex in the language editor I get the following error message " A File Operation Failed. Please Check Resource File Permissions So Files Can Be Edited."  I am able to modify the global resources file and the NETWORK SERVICE has RWX permissions on all files and folders.

Any ideas?

Solved all my problems.  it turns out that there is something amiss with the installation of my development site.  I am able to successfully add a custom profile property and all of my previous errors have gone away.  Not sure what the difference is but will post when I figure it out.  thanks for your help.
