I've created a really cool web site for our church. We'd like to add podcasts of the weekly messages to the site. In researching this, I've come up with a couple of questions:

1) Is the documents module with the syndication turned on the same thing as a podcast? If not, what is the difference?
2) When I check the allow syndication checkbox, no XML icon appears in my documents module. Anyone have any ideas as to why it's not being displayed?
3) If I can't do this with the documents module, is there a free podcast module available out there?

Here's the site (check out the bulletin and newsletter module) :

Thanks!

First, i like your site's layout, very clean and really professional skin.  Great job!

1) the document's module, as far as I've seen is not the same thing as a podcast.  There are many ways to create a podcast, and offer it, outside of dnn anyway.  Most take the form of using standalone applications, much like rss news aggregators  The nuts and bolts of syndicating a podcast is generating an rss feed that includes a container to hold the media file.  Usually, this type of media element is in an rss element tag name 'enclosure', part of the rss v2.0 spec, but not used widely.  The 'enclosure' tag is not generated with the internal rss feeds created when using the syndicate options for the standard core modules.

2) ..that could be due to some caching issue. don't know for sure, though.

3) With DNNv3.x, there was a module offerred by AeroSaga ( i think?), and that allowed something like the documents module to include a podcast, which is really just a link to file with your media file.

Thanks rserius! I can't take the credit for the skin, I just hacked Nina's free DesignAway skin to create it. I'll look around for that module by AeroSaga.

Hi, I just moderated this post, since I missed the last couple regarding syndication - firstly - thanks for using my design away skin - I really like people's interpretation on it.. and you've put in alot more content which is great.

Two sites I can direct you to when it comes to podcasting and syndication -

Scott Shecter - http://www.scottschecter.net - great developer, clean, neat and responsive and I suppose that when he asked me to first look at his module and I gave him some feedback, he was very responsive and has made some great updates to the module and I downloaded last week and installed on my 3.2.2 version but apparently his 4 version does more.

Then, I thought I'd explore the Orozonti products http://www.orizonti.com/ -they were interesting - it allows you to syndicate but in a different way- if you have several different pages on your site with podcasts and syndicated information, it's more like a little aggregator - it allows you to put in feeds from different pages, specify how many you want displayed and how long, etc and is also a nice choice for syndicating information.

I know that Scott has spent alot of time on providing his module's scalability - in reference to site that aggregate podcasts and syndications - like atomz, and I think it does video, allows for categorisation, images to go with the podcasts, editing, a few more things to make it slightly more refined.

Both seemed to be quite good products from reputable developers, and each has a cost - so I guess the decision really is yours.

I hope this gives you further scope to the products as well.
