Running DNN 5.0.1.  I've been able to create portals before without any problems.

Now, when I try to create a portal, I get an error:  The Portal Name Must Not Contain Spaces Or Punctuation.

I'm one of the administrators of the web server and SQL server.  We have 15+ live portals running and I've never had this error occur before.

I created a portal approximately 2 weeks ago without any problems.  The only other change since then is upgrading the Events module.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what to look for?

Try DNN 5.1.0

I'll see if 5.1.0 fixes it.

I did find out that when I create a child portal, using FOLDERNAME only as the Portal Alias instead of www.somesite.com/FOLDERNAME created the portal without any problems.  It's just odd, because I didn't have this issue 2 weeks ago.

childportal names always need to be preceeded by the parewnt portal path, which gets filled in by default. maybe you replaced it by accident instead of appending your portal name.

Nope.  The validation is not allowing me to have any dots or slashes in the Portal Alias.  When creating  a new child portal, putting in the foldername only is working, but putting the parentportal/foldername is causing the validation to not work correctly.  Upgrading to DNN 5.1.0 didn't fix this.

It's very bizarre, because I've been able to create Child Portals the "correct" way without any problems (the last one was 2 weeks ago), but when I tried creating one yesterday, the validation started acting up.
