Hi,

I noticed that my DNN database was growing faster than expected and I assumed this was down to the logs filling up.

I therefore logged in as host and went to the Event Viewer for the default portal and amended the log setting then clicked the "Clear Log" link. Aftera short while the page refreshed and a new log entry appeared for a Page Load Exception and the logs did not clear as the command timed out (presumably because of the large volume of log records).

I tried again and this time I got a windows dialog box pop up informing me of an error (unfortunately I cannot remember the details of the message other that the phrase "unhandled exception").

I logged out and the portal seems to be up and running okay (as does the other portal I have running).

However, I am now unable to log in as "host" or "admin" - it simply says login failed - remember that passwords are case sensitive!

...any help or advice as to how to log back in would be much appreciated!

Thanks Jeff.

That seems to cater for forgotten/lost passwords.

I know the passwords - they simply stopped worked after I tried to clear the logs. How can a failed attempt to clear the logs reset the admin/host password????

I can't help feeling that there must be a more subtle issue here!

Solved it!

I thought there was more to it.

Turns out that the action to clear the Event Log filled up the DB transaction log. This meant that no more records could be written to the database so even a valid login attempt failed.

To remedy I increased my database quota with my host (luckily I can do this via my control panel) and then was able to log in.

I then truncated the EventLog table in the SQL Database directly by running "TRUNCATE TABLE EventLog". I then ran DBCC SHRINKDATABASE(databasename) to remove any unnecessary database space. Finally I reduced my database quota back to a reasonable size.

Sorted.

Thanks for the response thought Jeff - that link could well be of use to me in the future and the website has many useful tips!
