Why is it there is Crawler specific code in dotnetnuke core? In my opinion there shouldn't exist such a code becasue it is a risk when doing SEO and dotnetnuke?

crawlers do not support javascript for instance. so a lot of code that has to do with the client api checks whether the client is a crawler or not, and renders non javascript output in case of a crawler. This is good SEO practice.

You can steer what crawlers should be handled like by modifying the crawlers definition in app_browers. (not advisible unless you need to add a crawler that is not handled by the files already there. also: add any new crawlers in a new file, instead of editing existing files to prevent loss of changes after upgrade)

But best SEO pratice is to feed crawlers exactly the same as normal users .... for example is there menu components that are serving true Html content and not in javascript first .... do we have a forum for SEO and dotnetnuke around?

Just to clarify this point, search engines expect the same content to be provided to them as normal users, however they don't care about the markup so it's perfectly fine to render a complex javascript based menu for normal user agents, and an unordered list for search engines. If you take a look at the solpart menu you'll see that it has a support for this (and in fact you can even use the forcedownlevel property to force this for all users).

In addition, asp.net itself uses device detection to decide on the rendering for server controls e.g. the asp.net calendar control that you see is very different from the simple anchor-based versions search engines see.
