I run a website for a local fire department and want to know how I would allow users (members of the department) to register and log into a specific page and only that page (I would either grant or deny access, not automatic). Here they have a phone list, documents, duty calendar, etc. Anyone have any ideas ?!?!?

This is the easiest thing for DotNetNuke:

  1. I suggest creating an individual security role like "department members", be sure not to make it public or automatic!
  2. configure registration method from portal settings. use either verified, if the users shall be able to register themselves and get default access, use private, if you want to acklowledge registered users yourself or use none, if no resgistration shall be available, so the admin has to create all users himself.
  3. for each private page set the appropriate permissions, so that it is only displayed to your "department members". This includes listing the page name within the menu.

That's it. You can also create an author's group and grant page or module authoring to its members.

I created the security role, configured the registration meathod by selecting "department member" on the settings for that page, and set up the permissions for each container. Now your 3. from above, is this a different set or permissions and how do I get the "Members Area" to show up on the main menu with the rest of my links? I assume because it's not a public page when it goes to it, it'll be a login page correct? Thank you GREATLY for your help, it's nice to have someone else help out since the literature on this isn't very clear!

Which registration method did you choose in "portal settings"?

Any should display "login", any except "none" should also display "register" on the skin (if you are logged of).

Pages, that all users do not have right to view, will not be listed in the menu for them. You need to set module permissions other than "inherit view permission from page" only in specific cases, e.g. for displaying "you need to be logged in, if you want to see any content on this page". For a demonstration, register at www.deutschnetnuke.de and view the different page contents for registered and unregistered users (switch to German to see child pages of "Tips and Tricks" disappearing for anonymous users).

Hope this helps.

The "site settings" permissions are set to "none", and the "Members Area" page permission is set to just the "department members." I apologize, I'm new to DNN. I was hoping to utalize the "login" & "register" on the home page to allow my members to the specific page but the last time I did that, I linked the "login" link to the members page, it wouldn't load and I was unable to log into the site to make changes, AT ALL!!!! So I had to uninstall DNN and reinstall it! That's why this time I want to make sure I don't mess it up again.

I understand how the view permission work and I know if I set the "Members Area" page to view by all, it'll show up on the menu but the page will be blank because the content is all blocked by the specific page permissions. I like how the link you showed me allows people to register and login, but how do you then edit the site if you change that link? I think I'm very much confused, more-so after reading the DNN book... lol
