Greetings

My Config:

Webserver - Win 2003 Std, IIS 6, Xeon 3.2, 3.5GB RAM, DNN 4.8.2

Database Server - Win2003 Std, Opteron 2.6, 3.0GB RAM, SQL2005

I am rolling out DNN as a corporate Intranet with Active Directory authentication.

Initially, performance was OK throughout, with some lag on the homepage load.

As I have implemented with more users (now approx 150), the lag on the homepage load has grown increasingly e.g. can now take 20+ seconds for it to load. However, once loaded, the performance navigating the site is fine.

On face value it would seem that the authentication process is slowing things down. Any help / advice for tracing and resolving the issue would be appreciated.

Mark, how many DNN roles are you running? How many AD groups (average) do the user's belong to? Are you synchronizing roles to groups (you have DNN roles that match the AD groups)? 90% of the time that's where things slow down but I've seen our old webserver (can't remember the process/RAM config off-hand) just about keel over and die once I added our website to the student's homepage list. It just couldn't handle a 1000 students hitting it at the same time. I'm working on getting the process speeded up but at this time of year my time is very limited (trying to get labs ready from when the students return at the end of August).

Thanks Mike,

I'm using Easy AD to synchronise the required AD Groups with Roles in DNN to avoid all of the users AD groups being imported..

At present I have 35 Roles which are mapped to AD Groups.

The average user belongs to 5 or 6 of those Roles.

In our AD, the average user has membership of around 40 AD Groups.

I have used Spotlight to monitor both the webserver and Domain Controller. RAM doesn't appear to be an issue, although the processor on the webserver occasionally spikes, but again seems generally healthy.

We have tried to present a degree of personalisation to each role by presenting some modules on the homepage dependant upon role membership. The lag presents itself when the user first enters the site, navigating back to the homepage from within the site is fine.

Further thoughts would be welcome.

I've never used or seen Easy AD in action so I'm not sure how it interacts with the AD. All I can speak to is the AD provider available here on the DNN site. Could you check the settings on your site for the provider and double check that Synchronize is unchecked?

Thanks Mike and sorry for slow reply. A few updates for you....

I have tried building a copy on a fresh (better) server and upgraded to 5.1.0 with 5.0.2 AD. I have uninstalled EasyAD. I am getting the same sort of lag on the home page load.

On both installs the Synchronize Role is checked. Surely I need this checked if I want the users roles to be synchronised with their AD account? Also, I can't find anything that explains the options in the Authentication Type drop down apart from Delegation is the default..
