I have a running 3.1 DNN that's been running for a few years.  I've installed a fresh copy of DNN 5.1 on a new server and I want to migrate the content, skins, etc. to the new 5.1 installation.

Is there a method to doing this?  Will 5.1 even load a 3.1 database data?

Can somebody point me to some info on how one might do this?

 I may be a little off on this - Someone else may chime in with more detail, but I think the upgrade path you will want to take to upgrade the site would be

Last 3.x.x
First 4.x.x
4.6.x 
4.9.4
5.1.0

You will want to check on the compatibility of any custom and 3rd party modules before upgrading.

 

As for migrating to a clean install of 5.1, no, there's not an official way. (a script, could, in theory, be written)
To use a clean install, you will need to manually recreate the pages, add the modules, and re-enter (via copy and paste where possible I'd imagine) the data.

I am sorry, that I have to correct, but due to parallel development of DNN 3 and 4, the previously suggested upgrade path might cause trouble.

Upgrading from 3.1.0 to current version is possible and should be executed in steps; I suggest (due to best practices and most common experiences):

4.0.3, 4.3.7, 4.4.1, 4.6.2, 4.9.4. Whether you may stay on most stable 4.9.4 or use latest 5.1.0 depends on your needs.

you may follow this check list for the upgrade procedure.
