Is there any way of making a container which allows me to have a different photo (as a strip) loaded for each container as the container header?

I found I can make a passable alternative by not displaying the container, and putting a photo at the top of the container - only works for the html module though...

You would need to create a custom container for each.  You can get the image in as a background image (my first choice), or you could insert it into the container using the <%=skinpath%> method.  Either way, you're going to have to know XHTML and CSS to get this right.  A note: many skinners refer to this type of container as a "banner container".

You don't need to hard-code any images in the container.  You can use the "icon" as a place to plop a banner type image.  The only problem with that is that the image would be a fixed width, so if the "icon" you choose for the module is narrower or wider than you want, that could be a problem.  You can hard-code background images that repeat instead of using the icon, or you can do both such as set the icon to be on its own row and apply a background image or color to that row.  Just some options.  I used the containers icon token to create containers that can be used as photo frames with captions.  The images you see framed on this page are placed in the frame using DNN's container icon function:  http://www.dnnstyle.com/tranquility3/Containers/Set4.aspx.  Just some ideas if you're willing to think outside the box when developing a design.
