I need to create DNN modules for different versions of DNN.
Currently I switch between them by deleting the contents of

My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C#\Web\
My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Basic\Web
My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic\
My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ItemTemplates\Visual Web Developer\CSharp\
My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ItemTemplates\Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic\

and reinstalling StarterKit of corresponding version...

What would be the better way to deal with necessity to develop simaltaneously (or in parallel) with multiple versions of DNN?
How can I give different names to installed (appearing in VS2008) templates in order to distinguish them in VS2008 (during DNN website creation)?

PS
BTW, would not it be more comfortable to have all those files in one directory? What is the sense of splitting them between various-multiple-different dirs?

Guennadi Vanine,

Are you taking advantage of different features in these versions of DNN? If not, it would probably be easier just to establish what the oldest version you would like to use is and modify the VS template (if necessary) to reference that version of DNN. Then you could always use the same template.

Alternatively you could just edit/rename one of the VS templates so that you have both installed at the same time and available in Visual Studio.

Take care,

Ian

Ideally, the Starter Kits tmeplates would come with a version number included in the file names and content.  To get around it, I think you'll have to create a copy of the templates and rename them and modify them to have a version number on it.

This is exactly my question:
how can I rename the template?
BTW I even do not see their complete titles, they are truncated

Here are a couple of links that will help you get started with editing the Template files:

 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6db0hwky(VS.80).aspx

http://www.thecodinghumanist.com/Content/HowToEditVSTemplates.aspx

Essentially, the template is just a collection of  normal VS project files with tokens in them. Then there is a .vstemplate file that instructs VS on how to replace those tokens when you create a new project from it. So at the very least, you'll just need to do some copying and renaming.

Hope that helps,

Ian
