Hi

I am getting ready to move my two main sites to 5.1.x in the next month.
I am doing my "due diligence" and finding out which modules need to be updated (and when).
I know I can always revert back from my DB and site file backups if things go wrong but I would prefer to have a "practice upgrade" before doing it on the real sites.
Its been ages since I had a local host install so I was wondering if the following scenario made sense.

Add an HTTP alias to the online sites DB of testsite.com
Upload a copy of all the existing sites files to the test domain.
Connect a copy of the DB to this domain
Remove the aliases.

At this point do I have 2 discrete and separated sites using the same files and DB?

I can see a possible problem with encryption keys?
Some licensed modules will maybe throw errors but do you think is this a viable / sensible way to get a quick testing environment.

Point Perhaps: Its when this sort of thing comes up that the correct but time consuming practice of running localhost analogues of key sites makes sense.

Thanks

Ian

Ian,

Your process seems to be sound.  The encryption keys will NOT be an issue, since the web.config is the same.  The key is to NOT forget to change the connection strings on the copy of the site to point to the new copy of the database!

What he said !  I am going through exactly the same process at the moment and I remembered this bit just before I would have screwed everything up.
