Hi All,

I want to add a song into the home page that starts up automatically when you go to the website. I also want the song to keep playing when people are visiting other pages on the website...I don't want the song to stop and restart everytime someone clicks on a different page.

Also, I will have a list of music on other pages and want the home page music to stop once someone clicks on another song on a different page. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

As far as I know, the only way would be to wrap the whole site in a frame (yuck!) with the player in the wrapping frame. However, this is such a bad option I wouldn't even consider it. One - I have no clue how DNN would react to being accessed via a frame,  Two - it's frames, your rankings would be horrendous.  The problem is that you need to maintain a consistant state throughout, and with any site that requires page loads, it's going to restart the player. Most sites that accomplish this are encapsulated in Flash (double yuck!) which once again presents many issues with usability and SEO.

Two other potential methods:

  • Launch hidden child window to play music.
The issue here is that you must manage the child window and somehow synchronize its closing with your visitor departing your site.  The most reliable way is to have the child window asynchronously check in with the parent window and/or with a user status on the host website.  If the child window is unable to determine that a user is still visiting your site, it will end the music and close itself.

  • Fade out/in for page changes with music continuity.
This is a much nicer option though the music does get interrupted.  In this scenario you capture the navigate / window.location event.  When a user clicks to a new page, you first do a quick music fade and set a session variable (er, session object) with the current music selection and the playback position.  On the new page load, do a quick fade in on the music from the point of the previous page's fade out.  You'll probably have to create your own simple Flash-based music player in order to make it "fade-in / fade-out aware" and take control of the starting point for fade-in.

Ok, thanks. I am having another problem. I am using a flash video player called Ultra Flash Player 6.4. I was able to upload my mp4 video to my ftp server but now I am having problems playing it.

I am using GoDaddy's hosting and the video sound plays, but no video shows up! It's on an IIS7 server. Any ideas how I can get this to work?

Thanks.
