Little question.

In the sownload section, you can download source, install or upgrade package of DNN.

Upgrade - it's ok, only for upgrade.

But install and source  - both can be used for construction of new site.

I know, that you will always suggest to take install package for a new site, but what if I'll build my site from source package?

I already tested it, and it works. I downloaded the source package, extracted it to site's folder and ran install wizard. The site was installed ok.

I would like to know, if there's some performace problems that may occur with that kind of installation?

And, if I have already a  working site, made by this kind of installation, which is slow, and I don't know why - is it host or site package, - what can I do to optimize it?

To mention, I did not open the site in Visual Studio and did not build it. It's working but very slowly. When you open the first page, it loads about 30 seconds.

The navigation is slow too.

Do I have to open the site and rebuild it?

The only time that I recommend using the Source package is if you are modifying the actual project.  Granted, there should not be any performance impacts, as really the big difference that you get with the source, is the "Library" part of the project, which makes the DotNetNuke dll file.

DNN on first load, will take some time, depending on server configuration I've seen anything from 1-2 seconds to as much as 30-45.  I strongly recommend switching to the install package for any actual sites that you are deploying, as well as reading my "DotNetNuke Performance Best Practices" guide which is available at http://www.iowacomputergurus.com/blog.aspx.

You never "build" a DNN site.  The Source version is only there in case you need to modify the source.  If you do not, the Install version is identical with fewer files.  As for your slowness, it has nothing to do with what you installed.  Some of it is due to the JIT compiling in ASP.NET, some of it is likely due to your configuration and/or content.

Take a look at:

Is there any easy way to switch from source to install package, if I already have a big site with a lot of content and modules installed ?

Can this be done just by replacing/merging folders?
