Hi

So I've been trying to wrap my head around how localization works...  And I'd like someone in the know to confirm my suspicions, please:

  • Installing a Localization Language Pack that indicates "CORE ONLY" refers to the DNN Controls and a few skin objects.  Changing the Locale (by clicking a flag or selecting from a drop-down) will translate these text sections into that language... Correct..?
  • If I want to translate the content (<p> text) of my Text / Html Module, my Announcement Modules, etc, I would need to get a pack that incorporates the translation of these elements in these modules..?  Yes..? No..?
  • Or, do I have to install a duplicate portal (surely not) and translate my text manually...?

Localization of the core language pack or the module's pack is just for the UI not the content. If you want to localize the content of your portals you should either use one of the content localization modules or create portals for each locale you want to use.
I use the latest and recommend my clients to create a separate portal for each local if they want the content in different languages. DNN is currently very good at localizing the user interface but has no real solution for content localization. Actually I did not find any CMS that does it efficiently.

OK, so localization modules - do those integrate with the Flags / Language Skin Object..?

AFAIK all ML page/menu localization solutions and content modules support core language skin object (most of them are from core team members like Mauricio, Benjamin and Erik).
