I'm experimenting with dnn5 on my local IIS and want another portal running on the same host. This is my configuration:

Win2003/SQL2008

IIS with 1 dnn site, accessible within our network with http://localhost and http://mycomputername

This works fine. I've added a new portal to my dnn installation with the following portalalias localhost/portal2 and computername/portal2

But in my browser I can't reach this portal with http://localhost/portal2 and also http://mycomputername/portal2 isn't working. I've added the hostheader portal2 in my website properties in IIS. What did i wrong?

For child portals you do NOT need to insert a host header.  Just set it up as a child portal within DNN and you are done!

Oke, you're right. But what is the difference between a child portal and a parent portal. Because my portals are using the same skin resources and custom modules, but it has to be impossible to see any inheritance of other portals. I've built a new child portal with a template.

Besides the fact that the child portal is located "within" a parent portal, there's no difference.

Mostly the access URL for the portal.  If your main portal is at www.sample.com, a child portal would be at www.sample.com/portal while a parent portal could be at portal.sample.com or even www.sample2.com.
