I just contracted for my first DNN site with one of the more popular hosting companies but after over a week, all I can get out of them is "thanks for letting us know about the problem" when I told them I couldn't FTP a file or connect via a network connection.  I am on vacation right now, and was planning to get in there and start working on it without the usual weekend distractions but here I sit browsing YouTube and tweaking my HTML and styles locally waiting for the day I can actually use them. Grrrrr.

I am looking for a starter site - just getting my feet wet with this and don't want to put it on the company servers until I know what I am doing.  Not looking for a commercial setup, will probably only have a couple of tabs and modules.  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

JoAnn

Install IIS on your dev system and use it for testing.

Hi JoAnn

I have been a cuatomer with PowerDNN for several years ($20/month, $200/year) and they are very good. Also you can try them out for two weeks for free.

Also many people swear by (not swear at !) WebHost4Life who have an add currently running beside this forum, starting at $8 /month as far as I remember.

If you want to try it out on your own machine, surf Microsoft Web Application Installer. DNN 4.9.5 Community Edition is their demo appliaction. This takes nearly all the sting out of running it on your own PC. You will find a blog about this, when you Google it.

Kind regards

I went ahead and set it up on my laptop for now.  If I am still having trouble with the other host when I need to get it online for the boss to dink around with (we are looking for a .NET CMS), if I still can't get what I need from the current host (finally got FTP connectivity today but the site is slow - when it isn't erroring out), I will definitely look at moving it to one of those recommended.  I found out thanks to an error message that the server is actually running on XP.  I don't think I've ever heard of an XP being used as a real webserver, let alone in a shared hosting environment.  The tech support guy tried to get me to extend the contract!
