Currently our Intranet website using DNN 3.2.2 runs off MSDE. And recently we have just added our 200th user. Whoo. But there is no way that we have that many users on the site at once. We would be lucky to have about 5-6 at the same time. Anyways, my company wishes to expand the user base further, so there is a possibility that the users will increase dramatically.

I have been asked to investigate the expansion by doing a few things:

  1. I read that the MSDE database can have a maximum of 23 concurrent users. What does that mean for DNN if that limit is reached? Is this limit reached easily? What are the implications?
  2. I have successfully migrated MSDE to SQL Express 2005 without any troubles on the development server. I still run 3.2.2 using the .net 1.1 framework but have changed the database provider. If i implement this in place of the MSDE engine will it solve user issues? Will it cause performance problems?

My thoughts are to just implement SQL Express 2005 and migrate the database across. Would this be a good idea?

Help would be much appreciated.

I'm certainly no expert on this, but to bump your topic also, I'll just say that I was under the impression that there is only one user in the SQL or MSDE database with a dnn site.  I know on mine I only set up one user, called dotnetnuke or dnn, I believe.  I'm considering moving up to SQL Express 2005 and the newest version of DNN also, so this one caught my eye.

This link explains the Work Load Governor in MSDE.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/architec/8_ar_sa2_0ciq.asp

The Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000 workload governor is designed to limit the performance of an instance of the database engine any time more than eight operations are active at the same time.
