I've had my site for many years in DNN, currently running 4.9 and want to translate the site to spanish.  I'm the only one keeping up with it, so I don't think I need to translate the core DNN stuff, but rather just the content of the site which is visible to the users.  I hope to market my services to central and south america.  I selected en-us and spanish-spain in the language setting, but after that I'm lost.  I have researched and don't know if I need a language pack or not.  Also I don;t know how when somebody clicks on the spanish flag the site will go to the spanish version.  Finally, would I need more flags?  I don't want to overcrowd my layout, I think spanish from spain would suffice all latin america, is this not the right way?  Can somebody offer some advice please? Thanks

You will need a Spanish language pack - good question - would Spain Spanish suffice for Latin America or vica versa... I am about to translate PokerDIY into Spanish and going to aim at the Latin American market though. I've seen them on Snow but there are no 5.x ones (these would just be the core language strings).

One thing to bear in mind is the context of your site - for example, I have changed a lot of core language strings to be more useful to my target audience - more friendly, poker-related (eg. Users are Players) - so any language packs would be generic too in that language... it's a good start for error messages etc.

As for your other questions - I am not there yet techincally - will know a lot more in a month or so...

I have "one" website that is multi-locale and plan to add new countries/languages to it.  Crowding of languages can be dealt with using drop-down boxes (see it here - http://www.snug-bugs.co.uk).

I actually use a different portal for each language and work on them together - gives far greater flexibility, especially when considering 3rd party modules as many aren't too hot with mult-locale.  Eg. this one uses Catalook (may change as a bug led to a feature being removed).  I want it to be able to take different currencies for payment but Catalook is not multi-currency.

Having different portals makes it easier to just deal with each in its own way without trying to get a single portal to do it all.

I'd also not be sure on the Spanish Flag - as it's not only a language but a country that is not theirs. Just my own view - I'd say Spanish/Espanol rather than a flag if I'm referring to the language.

If you do run it in a single portal - the Languages token will show the flags and the selected locale is just switched by clicking the flag. You then need modules that will store the data for each language.
