Choices have to be made! The Events team is thinking about the release (05.01.00) after the current release (05.00.03) we are working on. What should we do? Stay compatible with DNN 4.x or take the bullet and set DNN 5.1.x as minimum requirement?
Live ain't easy. even for our hobby/free time projects tough choices have to be made.
Compatible with DNN 4.7 and up
Up until now, we have had Events compatible with DNN 4.7 and up. But we are looking further away then the version we are currently (5.0.3) working on. For the current working version, our target is to solve all know bugs and create some enhancements (more then 30 issues have been identified and solved already, see this list on Gemini).
But should we move to DNN 5.x?
But what should we do afterwards? What should we do with the next version (Events 5.1.0, somewhere end of this year) in which we will try to enhance user experience? Supporting 2 different Events versions is not an option. The Events team does not have the resources available to do so.
DNN 5.x is more and more tempting to set as base level. Many enhancements, better ClientAPI, a new installer and more that could be beneficial for the next version of Events. And while we were a little worried about DNN 5.x stability at the beginning of this year, I think it is safe to say that DNN 5.1.x and up is a stable platform, at least as stable as but probably better then the latest version of DNN 4.x.
What is your opinion?
Can we set the minimum requirement for Events 5.1 to be DNN 5.1.x? Let's have some votes. Reply to this posting with your opinion!
