Hi,

I'm a web designer but first timer to DNN. It's really cool and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with it.

I have a client who has already done a reasonable site in DNN but he's not a designer and he wants me to apply my skills to update his site. No Worries!

But, he hasn't upgraded to version 5 and doesn't want to (he's afraid of it being radically different to use I think). Anyway, my question is: should I download version 4 because I'm concerned that if I download and use the latest version it wont be compatible with what he's already got.

And he will want to take back over the maintenance of the site once I've redesigned it.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

DW

The answer to your question should come from your customer.

To get used to it, you should go and play around first with the same version your customer has.

Install a second instance on your machine with the new 5.x version and compare on your own. The changes in the usuability are not so huge (my opinion), but decide on your own.

How to proceed depends on the real things your customer wants to achieve.

If there are only some minor things to do (changing of structure, maybe optimizing the skin) and beside this he is happy with it, then the rule is: never touch a running system.

If he wants to do a major rebuild, then he should consider doing an upgrade as well and then start the changes. Version 4 will be sunsetted in the future, as far as i know.

Hope that helped

Hi and thanks for replying.

We are involved in a complete redesign and I, as a designer, would like the new design to be W3C compliant. So from that point of view V5 is the way to go . . . surely?

Also, if V4 is going to be "sunsetted" soon then again V5 is the way to go.

I've designed a layout which complies with standards, pure css and xhtml, if I set it up in V5 would it be possible to bring it back in to V4?

I just want the site to be future proof obviously.

Regards,

Dave

If it's an old version of DNN 4, there might be some skin objet that are different or don't exist yet.

If you want to be absolutely sure you should use the exact version the client is using.

But if your client is smart he does upgrade to DNN 5, XHTML is an issue in some DNN 4 versions.
