So, I just upgraded my site in a test environment from 4.9.4 to 5.1.4
Everything seemed to go smootly, and site seems to be fully functional except it is painfully slow. I rolled back to 4.9.4 and everything is fast again.

I didn't get any SQL script errors durning the upgrade. The only error in the upgrade was
" Executing Application Upgrades: 05.00.00" Error!

Any suggestions on why it would be so slow?

this doesn't seem problematic, you may tweak performance settings in Host Settings (heavy caching, gzip compression but no whitespace filter!) as well as module caching (in module settings). Check largest tables, e.g. there have been duplicates reported in searchitemwordposition table of DNN 5.1.

After futher testing, I have found that the site is only slow when the user is authenticated. Unauthenticated users zip along from page to page just fine.
Once I login, the site is painfully slow to load... page eventually load, but it takes 60 seconds or so for the page to load.

I'll post the solution to the problem when I figure it out.
