I'm trying to get info on which search terms are most common on our site search.

new to DNN, and don't know where to start...

I am sorry, but there is no log of site searches. you will need to use an enhanced version of search input skin object/module.

Here's a free way to get some info on search terms (if you're using the built-in search):
 http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/108/threadid/281744/scope/posts/threadpage/1/Default.aspx

If you're using Google Analytics you can set up search tracking for your site (DNN uses "Search=" as the querystring variable for search).

For public websites (sites without private pages) I tend to replace the built-in search with Google AJAX search as shown (with a live example) here:
http://googleAJAXsearch.com

If you use the Google AJAX search you can declare a Custom Search Engine (CSE) through Google and get reports that way.

Cheers!

be aware, that using Google search on your site might require to place an appropriate warning aside in several countries.

Wouldn't the same statement then apply to a default DotNetNuke installation that provides a search interface for both local (site) and Google (web) search?
