Hello,

I just installed Windows 7 64bit and I an attempting to installed DNN.  I had successfully installed DNN 4.9.5 and 5.1.4 on my Vista 32bit computer so I thought this would be a chore.

I downloaded SQExpress 2008 and all the other necessary software, extracted the files, and navigated to //localhost/dnn.  When I to go the page to connect to the database, I got the following error: Message: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed.

So, I tried installing 5.1.4, and I got some JSON error.

My question is this, I realize Windows 7 was just released, probably not a good idea, but will DNN work with Windows 7 64 bit or should I install 32bit?  Or will DNN event work on Windows 7?

Thanks,

Jason

I had some problems initially with Win7, here's a blog post talking about what I had to do to get it working. Though I didn't try it with SQLExpress, only a full version of SQL Server.

I'd suggest to create a blank attached sql server db and maybe use a sql server account.

I have been running Windows 7 64bit for the last 3 months and have installed DNN with both SQL and SQL Express.  I don't know that I have had to do anything special other than making sure that I was using the correct Identity when assigning file permissions.  You can read more about the specific AppPool Identity used in IIS 7.5 (the version that ships in Win7 and Win Server 2008 R2) on IIS.net  http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/624/application-pool-identities/

Joe,

Thanks for the help.  After reading the article, I feel like I just pulled a rabbit out of my, you know what.....

This is what I did for others that may have the same issue.

I created a new AppPool, called DNNAppPool.  I then, changed the Identity to run as NetworkService since the SQLExpress service is also running as NetworkService.  Made sure the NetworkService account as full-control to the folder, and crossed my fingers.   DNN 4.9.5 is up-and-running.
