Hello, I'm fairly new to DNN, althugh I have installed a couple of DNN sites previously and realise that if everything isn't correct the sites dont install. I need to create a new DNN site to replace an old one, which needs to be running until the new site is ready. I plan to create a new DNN website(online using a spare domain) and database, so when complete I can then ftp upload to existing domain. The database will be the same, just the new DNN site moved from one domain to another. can anybody let me know if  I'm likely to encounter problems? or if this is a good way to go about this.

Thanks for any help. Chris

Chris,

you should be able without limitations to create a new site on a local machine using a different domain address and move it onto the production server when going life. You should use the same relative path (e.g. localhost instead of localhost/dotnetnuke), because links in richtext fields are saved server relative. also make sure not to enter absolute paths manually within texts.

How to move a site is covered by a pinned post in "Install it!" forum.

Hi, I had a look for the post on moving a dnn site as was sugested above, I didn't look through all of the pages (over 1100), is there any way you could be more specific? Thanks Chris

from what i understand you are trying to do, you will get into trouble if you want to have a new dnn install use a database of a different install. SO, if you are creating a new site, both files AND db need to be moved.

moving a site is qutie easy:

  • make sure you have the correct http aliases set up PRIOR to moving
  • make sure both database server are of the same version (you can move from 2005 to 2008, but not the other way around)

The rest should be fairly simple (comparable to installing a new site)

Ok, this is how I see I'll  proceed with the move. The current site is up and running at the correct domain, and needs to be up and running until the switch to the new website. I have a development domain where I will install DNN. I have a new database for the setup of the new site, so the site will be running on a test domain initially. When the switch occurs I add an alias of the new permanent domain and upload the site to this permanent domain. so because the database location hasn't changed the connection to the database should be fine. Would I be correct using this method?
