First off, I'm a .Net programmer.

I've used DNN "out of the box" before for setting up sites for friends (and their wive's workplace) so that I don't have to be called every time they want to make a change.

DNN is a great architecture, and an easily usable CMS. Great job everyone.

Now I would like to use it for my own purposes.

I will be buying the DNN Wrox books so I don't have to come here and ask mundane questions but, for now,  let me throw out an amateur's question: Why can't I use <%= %> in the HTML in HTML modules? 

Someone is going to say "like the module states, it's HTML".

Great, that tells me nothing. So, is it possible to (how do I) put dynamic content into a page?

In the context of programming DNN, you lost me at "loadcontrol", because nowhere in DNN "out-of-the-box " do I see a place for me to execute such a function.

It sounds like I need to get over to Amazon and buy the Wrox books. Programmer to programmer, what do I need, these?:

Stefan was pointing out to you that you need to create a custom module, calling loadcontrol to load the ascx you have to create.

Both, DotNetNuke 5 by Shaun Walker et al. and DotNetNuke Programming by Mitchel Sellers are good resources for developers, IMHO the first is a good intro while the second one describes a number of items more in detail and is more up2date.
