I have set the permissions to my Forum module for edit to all users and I can see the "New Thread" and "Reply" buttons but if not logged in when I click on them says "either you're not logged in or you have no permissions". This doesn't make sense, I set the edit for All Users not only for the registered ones.

Set Edit permissions for the roles you need. Registered Users = All Roles. However, All Users = All Roles + Unauthenticated Users. The Forum module is not designed to allow Unauthenticated users to post. It's been said everywhere here in the forum.

First, Nestor is correct. It is not possible to allow unauthenticated users (All Users) to post threads or replies. This is not a discussion module with commenting so we currently have no plans on making this happen.

Second, I think the module does need to start using a permissions grid similar to how modules do. This would remove some of the permissions processing requiring hits to the database. We are also looking to support in 3.3 + the ability to go to a post directly, get directed to login, then be sent right back to where you were originally going.

First of all thanks to everybody for answering to my post.

Back to the issue I think that the decision to let unauthenticated users to post or not in a forum should be always let to the forum administrator (the forum user) and not to those who design forums. There are websites that have not that much of a traffic and conditioning posting by registration will drive away the already few visitors. Let's face it, is a hassle for many people to have to register only for posting a reply to a message and instead of doing that they will just drop it. I one would like to be able to set the forum to let unauthenticated users to post and even to type a nick for their identity, if not just leave them Anonymous.

So, forum developers, take a note and maybe action later. :) I am a developer myself but not enough skilled yet in DNN to do it by miself.

Cheers!

I don't think most understand the effort required so that anonymous users can post. First and foremost it requires lots of planning in advance to prepare for what would need to be done. Normally, I would agree that site admin not developer should decide what is best but in some cases this is not always the best option.

One important thing to keep in mind here is something I have discussed in these forums before, the 80/20 rule. For a change of this magnitude, we have to decide if it fits at least 80% of the use cases and with this enhancement it certainly does not. I spend time using other forum systems and I don't think I have ever used a single one that allows anonymous posts. (Not saying they don't exist, just saying I have yet to see one that does and a site using it that way)

Again, as you explain your desired user case it seems another module is more appropriate for this that is not a forum. I respect your use case, but we cannot deliver this and still keep this module moving forward.
