Hi all,

I'd like to confirm our upgrade steps prior to upgrade from 4.9.4 to 5.1.4. We have few external modules installed, but some, like Active Social, comprise a significant portion of the content on our site.

We're running / have installed:

.Net 2.0 SP 2
.Net 3.0 SP 2
.Net 3.5 SP 1

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 & Management Studio Express

In addition, we will be changing the IIS/host associated with our instance of DotNetNuke. So, the process for installing SEEMS to go something like this:

1. Backup stuff
2. Create the new IIS instance
3. Copy over original files from DNN 4.9.4
4. Overwrite DNN 4.9.4 files with DNN 5.1.4 files (Note: Which version should we use? Upgrade, or install?)
5. Run upgrade scripts
6. Test upgrade
7. ????
8. Continue on our merry way

Is anything missing from this picture? If so, what else do we need to install/consider/take into account?

#4. You should use the UPGRADE version.

Recommended best practice is to use a known good extractor program; WinZip WinRar, etc or right click on the upgrade package and choose "Extract All" (using the built-in extractor in Windows) so the merge functionality is preserved.

Target your DNN 4.9.4 folder and overlay the upgrade over your exisiting installation.

Everything else you've listed is correct.

I would add.

Unblock the zipfile before extracting the zip to the folder.

Dave, I strongly suggest changing platform step by step:

- first change the server with current install

- make sure it runs fine

- backup all files and database again

- upgrade DNN version

It sounds wise atm to wait for 5.2.1, there has been some effort to leverage upgrade issues and 5.2.1 will iron out most major issues introduced with DNN 5.2.0.

Whats the ETA for 5.2.1?

I want to upgrade a 4.x installation to the most recent version and do not want to run into known issues when upgrading.
