No ideas as I haven't seen that issue before.

  1. Is the gallery configured to show the image viewer in a pop-up?
  2. Does a second click of the zoom button (or one of the other image editing buttons) cause the image to reappear?
  3. If you close then reopen the image viewer does the image display properly?
  4. Does the image disappear every time the zoom button is clicked?
  5. Does the image disappear any time one of the other edit buttons is clicked?
  6. Does the user have edit permission on the module and if Is Private is checked in the configuration, is the user also the gallery owner so that the save file icon appears in the image viewer after making an edit to the image?

I can see that you have a real issue there. Whenever the gallery needs to dynamically create an image (such as following use of any of the editing buttons), the modified image bits are streamed back to the browser via a special file located at the url /DesktopModules/Gallery/Image.aspx. Although this .aspx file only contains a control directive referencing compiled code, the file must be present in that folder or else a missing image icon (red X) will be shown instead of the modifed gallery image. Since the url to Image.aspx appears to be correct and since I cannot reproduce this issue in several tests, I suspect that either the file Image.aspx did not get installed into the site's /DesktopModules/Gallery folder when the module was installed or was later removed. A test site having this file removed did reproduce the same issue you are experiencing.

If the file is missing or corrupted, you may replace it directly from the install package or by repeating the installation of the module package (Host-->Module Definitions-->Install Module) with the repair option checked. Let me know if that was the problem!
