I'm new to skinning and have been unable to find where in the mass of css, xml, xhtml, html, and ascx files my graphics are to be referenced and called into action. I've watched a video tutorial twice on skinning in DNN5 and the only reference to graphics is that you set them up in html just like normal. Did that. But no where do they come back to show, or say, how or where to tie in the site graphics.

I'd be most appreciative if someone could shed some light on this?

Have you looked at the default skin/container to see how they work?  In general, graphics are used in either the skin/container and are part of the HTML or they are part of the CSS files.  Remember there are a number of CSS files which all combine.  Open the default skin in Firefox with Firebug and inspect the file for the graphics you choose.
