Hello all

Does anybody have experience of using DNN  with the Web Deployment Project component (WDP) for Visual Studio? I currently use the WDP in VS2005 to rebuild websites after changes, which involves a full 'pre-compiled' version of the development web-app gettiing automatically deployed into a different 'production' web-site on the web server - it does this by compiling all DLL projects in the VS Solution, compiling and copying across all the ASP.NET pages as pre-compiled .aspx files, and modifying .config files in order to point to production databases, rather than my development databases.

With my current site, there is CMS capability available to non-technical users. I'm wondering if I could start to build a new web-site using the DNN starter kit in VS, and still deploy in the same way using the WDP. Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick, because DNN can already account for this sort of deployment of a development site into a production site? If it is possible to use both, does anybody know how I would go about setting up VS to use both DNN and WDP? E.g., can I simply add a WDP into a 'DNN-aware' solution created with the starter kit in VS?

Regards

Modules can be web deployment projects, but the DNN core doesn't support compiling.  Since you shouldn't be modifyiong the core, that's perfect.  Of course if you're just "setting up sites" then stop using Visual Studio and use DNN itself.

DNN includes its own packaging format for extensions, which is not compatible with WDP

Hi there

Thanks for that. I was wondering if there was any information available about techniques for automating deployment of changes from a development site into a production site. By that I mean: is it possible to develop the changes to a DNN site on a development site, that is hosted on the web server, and which can then be automatically deployed to overwrite the existing production site hosted on the same web server. This is what I currently do with a Web Deployment Project from a VS solution for a non-DNN web site, on my own development PC, but I was looking for an analagous procedure for a DNN web site, if this is even possible.

Thanks very much for your advice.

Regards
