After an admin skin change I get for all the admin and host pages the message below:
An error has occurred.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: type ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: type at System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) at DotNetNuke.Framework.Reflection.CreateObject(String TypeName, String CacheKey, Boolean UseCache) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.NavObjectBase.InitializeNavControl(Control objParent, String strDefaultProvider) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Controls.TreeViewMenu.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Control.AddedControl(Control control, Int32 index) at DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage.Page_Init(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Page.OnInit(EventArgs e) at DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

I assume, you didn't install the tree menu needed for the skin to work.

to regain access, I suggest renaming the skin folder (inside /portals/_default/skins, which should result in a fallback to default skin (dnn_blue in this case).

if you are still on 4.4.1, I strongly suggest an upgrade, to 4.9.5 or 5.2.1, when available soon.

You assumed right. The Horizontal skins work ok.
How can I install the tree menu?
And how can I relatively painlessly upgrade to v5 (prefered) or v4.9.5? Is there a guide?

TIA

additional menu will be installed during upgrade to a later DNN 4.

To upgrade DNN, I did put together a check list here, besides there are articles at www.mitchelsellers.com.

I suggest upgrading in multiple steps via 4.6.2 and 4.9.5 (if you decide to go to DNN 5 already).

The first step will require to modify web.config manually.
