I have looked at the source DNN produces, and the id "viewstate" contains a string which is no less than 15,488 characters in length.

Someone please tell me this is a joke. Because it IS a joke - right?

No one in their right minds creates such a string, for anything, ever, except excryption purposes.

So much for my idea about producing "lean", "efficient" or "lightweight" HTML for a browser...

LMAO!

I am going to assume that you have never developed a ASP.Net application before.  ViewState is a .Net thing, not a DNN thing.  It is how ASP.Net tracks values from one postback to another.  For example, in a normal web application if you need to postback to the server and you want to preserve the data already entered into a form field (such as a textbox) you would have to handle that yourself (i.e. repopulate the textbox before sending the page back to the browser). In ASP.Net ViewState handles that for you.  It is a very nice feature so long as it is not abused.

BTW ViewState can be disabled when not required.

Just a suggestion, in the future before posting such a negative thread about a great OS product, you may want to get to know the technology it is written with first.  That generally clears up a lot of misunderstandings...

Viewstate is automatically created by asp.net to maintain controls state across postbacks. You can read about it @ http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnaspp/html/viewstate.asp . In DotNetNuke we also encrypt the viewstate to stop people altering or tampering it.
