Using DNN 4.09.04 and Repository Module 3.01.15

Where do you define the dimensions of thumbnails used with the Articles skin?  I'm using this module and articles skin on two different sites and thumbnails are displayed in different sizes on each and I can't find what controls that.

Also, if large files are uploaded for the article image, does DNN create a separate thumbnail or is the original file used? If a separate file is created, where is it stored?

I've been on this forum for an hour trying to find an answer to these questions but all I get is an error when search is used.  Very frustrating when I know the answer is on here somewhere but don't have hours to read every post.

After numerous attempts, the search function finally returned something besides an error and the answer was revealed! - template.xml.

As for my second question about file size, it seems that the original file is saved and the thumbnail created on-the-fly as needed. If that assumption is true, does original file size have any impact on page load times?

glad you found your answer

the thumbnails are generated in response to the img links being rendered .. so the process would be the page source being generated and sent to the client browser, then as the source is being rendered on the client side, the img links make calls back to the server to request the images. The server reads the original image files and generates a thumbnail of the appropriate size and streams the image bytes back to the server.  With on-the-fly image generation there is obviously some processing that takes place on the server, which will result in some very small increase in the amount of time it takes the images to appear.

Honestly, I believe we're talking miliseconds here, and since thumbnails are only generated on demand for items being displayed, the overall increase in time for a page to be displayed should be insignificant

Thanks for the reply Steve. That's pretty much what I thought was happening and I won't worry so much about users uploading 3Mb files that are only going to be used for a small thumbnail.

I hope you, your family and all the DNN developers and staff have a Great 2010!

About searching for information in the forums....

I  agree the Forum search is troublesome -- however, if you use the site search (on the menu bar) you will be pleasantly surprised... it's a Google based search .. very fast
