Can someone please explain why adding a subpage changes the styling of the root menuitem it is under?!

I have a style set for the root menu items of my site that uses background images for selected, hover etc. This works fine when the root page has no subpages. However, as soon as I add a subpage the rootmenu style loses the background image.

Narrowing down the problem. There's some inline styling generated in the menu item that overrides my styles and replaces my image with another one.

Why is the inline style there and how do I get rid of it?

did you notice the selected items get a class "sel" and any pages above the selected item the class "bc"?

Or do you have this issue also if the root page is selected?
