I am trying to determine the source of a problem installing DNN4.  Druring install, the database tables get created, and while some tables are populated, the Portals and/or PortalsAlias tables are not loaded with default portal data. Subsequently I get a  Portal failed to install and the Object reference not set to an instance of an object error when launching the Portal default page.

Could someone direct me to the scripts/app that builds and populates tables on the install? I'd like to test out the scripts manually to try to isolate the problem.

I'd suggest you try to re-install from scratch. If you get any install errors, post them here.

Reinstalled from scratch many times to no avail.

However - problem solved: I found that if I change the minRequiredPasswordLength to "6", the default portal data will not populate for me. Keeping all things equal and changing it back to the default "4" gives me a successful install.

Hello:

Actually, based on the information given here you must have changed your NTFS permissions to allow the installation process to create your portal, i.e. portal\0...  No need to worry about the length of password unless you would like to enforce password lengths on a private or verified site.
