Hello,

Our site is on DNN 4.8. It has been upgraded from DNN 4.34. The site has been in production for about 6 years. There are so many files of all types (PDF, movie, graphic…) uploaded to the web server to feed the content of the site. These files are used by different modules e.g. HTML/Text module, media module,…. Many are also used in page setting functions. In addition, most of the files are used by multiple modules in multiple pages.

The problem now is many of these loaded files are obsolete and no longer in use in any page. My task is to remove these files to reclaim storage.  I would greatly appreciate any advice on  an efficient way to identify files which are not used by any module in any page in order to delete them safely?

Regards

Anp

there is no overall repository of file references, the easiest might be creating a copy of your site, removing all user files from portals directory and identify the files missing by scanning all pages or using new SEO tools for IIS 7 (see microsoft.com/iis). note all files missing and remove all others from the web  site.

Thank you for your quick response. The site has more than 800 pages and each page has many, many links. It will take a while to scan all of them, but I guess it is my only choice for now.  If someone has different approach, please share. Thanks in advance.

AFAIK the lick checker in IIS7 package "SEO tools" will be your best option, though it is still a lot of work, I can imagine.

The problem is our site still runs on IIS 5, and upgrading is not an option for now :-(.
