I have a request for the DNN team: Can you please create a simple and clear page on the website that shows people how to UPGRADE.  A page that is VERY EASY to find from the download page, and one that includes the "Normal" way to upgrade that the other options available and why.

I have searched and this site a number of times looking for a central area of info on how to upgrade and I have not found one. Since this product upgrades often 4 times a year, is there any way that someone could take the time to post a page on Upgrading DNN.

I find that I am constantly piecing parts of blog articles together with forum posts to figure out what to do and it would be extremely helpful if the information on how to do this was in one place, and easy to refer to, I am sure I am not alone in this request.

If you also feel this way, please add to this post so the Admins will realize just how many people are interested in this.

If this page already exists, please post a link, because I am in the middle of upgrading 6 of my DNN sites at the moment and I would really like to read it.

thanks

If you're new to upgrading I recommend you read the "detailed installation guide" found here , and the excellent set of blog entries from Erik here and here. For users who are running 4.6.2 or above, I recommend you read this blog entry which details how to use the upgrade package to easily merge any web.config changes.

FYI we're working on a wiki at the moment and will be adding sections on upgrading to it so people will have an easy page to go to for upgrade advice

Thank you Cathal and Sebastian for your posts and links.  However you are actually re-enforcing my original point, and that there isn't a formal "How to upgrade" page, but only pieces of information scattered throughout the site.  The reason I am asking for this is because it is not obvious to new users for one, and for more experienced users there is no "standard process" for us to compare all of the different blog entries and forum posts that we sift through before we start an upgrade to know what we should be expecting.

For example this post I found useful: http://www.dnndaily.com/tips/itemId/3... because it let me know that if I am upgrading from 4.6.2 or later I can use the automated feature. I was not able to find this information confirmed on  the DNN site.

I just upgraded a site from 4.8 to 5.2.2 and thanfully used a staging server as I ran into this problem:
http://www.bestwebsites.co.nz/dotnetnuke/solving-the-dotnetnuke-redirect-loop/  .  But at least I have found some information here on the forum ( I believe it was from Sebastian)  explaining not to upgrade directly from 4.8 to 5.2.2 and go to 4.9 first.  These type of upgrade paths are listed here: http://www.willstrohl.com/Blog/tabid/...  but it would be great if they were officially listed on the DNN site, with a list of common problems that have been found in each (simple so we know what to look out for)

There are lots of experts like yourselves that answer these questions one by one, which we appreciate, but it would be great if some of that information was placed on a page that was DIRECTLY linked to the upgrade downloaded page, so that we could have these initial answers at hand. You would stop running around answering a lot of repeated questions one by one, and we would stop searching the site over and over just to double check that we are upgrading the correct way.

Hopefully some higher ups at DNN read this request and a link to an official "How to Upgrade" page is posted right  on the download page itself at some time in the near future.

Please post your thoughts if you agree with this so they know people really are interested and are looking for a page like this.

Thanks

Sadly Sebastian and I are "higer-ups" in DotNetNuke terms

We're well aware that things could and should be better, that's why the reference team was formed and we're currently finalising a Wiki setup. I appreciate that there are bits of documentation scattered about (note: in my earlier post one of the links does detail the xmlmerge functionality), but that's really because theres no good place to store adhoc documentation. When we do create docs (such as the installation guide) they go out of date too quickly, and can go stale if the original editor doesn't have time to update it, and theres no way for someone to quickly type up some documentation without going through a longer process. Thats why I believe a wiki is vital (plus getting the community involved means the documentation will be more comprehensive than even a team of people could produce)

We have many other items on our agenda, including better DotNetNuke API references, videos, and other resources, but these things take time - i am confident though that we're getting there.
