I'm new to the DNN Development world & would like to set up or create a DNN Development Environment on my home Windows 2003 Server, w/ IIS 6 and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. Is there anyone that can either send me a link with step-by-step instruction for doing this for both 4.x & 5.0 or anyone that can give me step-by-step instruction??? Yes I want to setup development for both platforms. Although all the sites I am using DNN on currently are 4.x I will someday be upgrading to 5.x.

Thank  you,

Les

I've started writing some blog posts on the DNN coding: http://bit.ly/92EfYW

I havent yet got to describing dev environments, but it would be something like this:

- VS 2008 or 2010 so you can target DNN 4 and DNN 5 from the same code
- Modules created using WAP projects
- Module coded outside of the DNN project, with a batch file to copy the compiled files to a test DNN site
- Folder structure would be a bit like this:

\dev\modules\module-name
\dev\sites\dnn495
\dev\sites\dnn521

Tools to help the process:
- SVN
- Nant
- Nunit
- Cruisecontrol.NET

Thank you for you reply, but i was able to create a development environment using DNN 4.9.5 Install & I was able to get VS 2005 to set ulp the environment. However when I try to add a New Project there are NO DotNetNuke Module Template or DotNetNuke Skin Templates. Is there somewhere I can obtain these or can I use the DotNetNuke Web Application Framework, DNN Compiled Module (VB/C#), DNN Dynamic Module (VB/C#), DNN Simple Dynamic Module VB, & DNN Skin from an earlier version such as  DNN Version 4.9.2??

Or do I have to set up the development environment using DNN 4.9.2 Starter Kit to get the Templates??

Thank you,

Les

Hi Les,

That is expected, the 'Install' version "Contains only the files needed for a run-time deployment to a web server. Download the Install Package if you want to deploy a live site to a web server with the minimum required files." This is perfect when you just want a lighter weight download for distribution to a new server, etc.

To get the Visual Studio templates you're exactly right, you'll need the 'Starter Kit' to get templates. Per the download page: "This MSI installs Visual Studio Templates for creating websites, modules and skins in Visual Studio. Download the Starter Kit if you are a web developer interested in creating skins or modules for the DotNetNuke web application framework using Visual Studio."

I find this page is a good place to locate prior releases such as 4.9.x : www.dotnetnuke.com/Development/Downlo...

Cheers, Dylan
