Hello Will,

I heard back form Beth at Active Modules and hoping to get more details from her. My biggest concern is that to convince our client to do this migration, I have to make sure that they are not losing features they had before and hopefully gaining features. If the current forum is working for them and  their users, I don't want to make them change and not have their users like it :(

Thanks!

Yes, Beth at AF is very helpful. When I rebuilt that recent hacked site, she did not hesitate in helping my recover my license keys and get reinstalled. Its very easy to install and I cannot imagine your client losing any features. This forum had the entire wishlist my clients gave me. I believe they would love it. If you are at all handy with a DB,  I imagine you can pull info from the old tables to the new ones on AF without too much trouble.

Having worked with both PhPBB and Active Forums, as well as a number of others, your client won't see any lost features.  They will find that features are different, moved or work in a different manner, but it's very easy to get used to.  The front-end customization can be done to match just about anything existing.

Now that I've said that, realize that there are quite a few add-ons to PhPBB and different mods for it, these may or may not affect your look and feel changes.  As for the conversion, it's really just database migration.  Personally I'd pay AF to do it, but any decent database admin could probably convert the data.
