Hi, I keep reading this everywhere I go and I would like some more clarification if anyone knows.

Why does the Site Log eat up performance?  As far as I can see all it does is insert new rows with every page visit.  Now I don't know much about how SQL functions in regards to performance, but I would think that unless the table is being accessed for retrieval then having loads of information in the table wouldn't really matter.

So what is so bad about the Site Log that has us limiting it's use to such short time frames?

Thanks,

Michael

The main issue I see with the site log is this, the table is a "dual purpose" table it has indexes on the table for reporting, and it is a logging table.  The issue here is that as the number of entries grows, the insertion cost grows as the indexes cause data to be re-organized.

This is why you will see growth of the table reduce performance.

So if you are going to use the Sitelog - what are the recommend settings - the last 10 days only and a buffer or around 500 items? I've turned mine on (for the first time in 4 years!) as it has some cool reports - I have not noticed a big difference so far...

Personally I don't use it, so I don't have any recommendations on the "best" configuration for it.
