My school is using DotNetNuke, but I haven't received much training for it.  How can I easily find out what modules do or look like and the best way to edit them?

Are you looking for core modules or third party modules? For core modules, each module has a team page as well as a blog. I would start on the team page (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Development/Forge/tabid/824/Default.aspx). For third party modules I would take a look at the vendors website.
