I received an invitation to join WebSiteSpark from DotNetNuke and WebSiteSpark, but I am having some difficulty getting started. I am trying to determine what to download and setup. I am particularly concerned about not dragging my development laptop to a halt. It is already running an apache server for testing and development. Of course, I don't seem to be able to get any help from Microsoft on this without a significant fee.

What I would like to do is install the required software on my laptop in a way that won't interfere with the laptop's other operations and install DotNetNuke into that environment. A virtual machine is an option for me. I can install a server platform on my server or in a VM on my server, but I would not be able to develop remotely in that scenario.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hello, you have a couple of options. First of all you can simply run vs.net 2008 and use it to develop with - it has a built in webserver that runs on a random port that will not interfere with the apache instance. It will also install vs express which you can use as the database, or else alternatively install the full sql server product. It's also possible to install IIS, microsoft's webserver. Whilst it and apache cannot work on the same bindings (i.e. by default both will try to use port 80), you can either stop apache when you're using it, or else use an alternative binding (e.g. change to a different port or use a different IP or else a host header) Finally, you could use a virtual machine.

Thanks for the feedback. For downloads, MS is offerring and I'm looking at the Microsoft Web Platform Installer, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, etc. so I'm just trying to figure out where to start. I was also concerned about installing IIS and having no way to control startup to be on demand. If I install into a VM, I am figuring it would be best to install the other web site spark software into that VM as well, at least initially. I'm referring to Expression Studio 3, Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, etc. Of course that leaves a shared folder to move files from my other development tools like my graphics programs into the VM.

Any insite is appreciated. Right now I think the big question is what to download. Should I download the Microsoft Web Platform Installer, or download the components separately. Is Windows Server 2008 R2 Web an OS I could develop on (i.e. use that for the VM OS and install the development sopftware on that)?

Thanks for your time.

As a follow up to anyone else this might help, I downloaded Windows Server 2008 R2 and installed the web edition into a Virtualbox VM using a bridged network adapter. My router allows me to assign a static IP to the VM's NIC, so I did not have to configure the static IP on the VM itself.

I used the Web Platform Installer, but something went wrong with creating the database on the SQL Express that it installs. I think I did not have the right password for the SQL Express Server.

I installed the full MS SQL Server into the Server 2008 VM. Being new to MS SQL Server, I found some help on the web and used the SQL Server Management Studio to create the database DotNetNuke and a user to own and manage it.

-NOTE the web platform installer can probably accomplish this using SQL Express, but after my first attempt at using the Web Platform installer failed, I just installed the full SQL server and researched how to set it up.

I then used the Web Platform Installer to install DotNetNuke and everthing works perfectly.
